We all access the internet. And when we use it, we want the time spent on the internet to be productive. Well, at least this is true for most of the time. This is going to be a short article on the 5 extensions I use to increase my productivity and remove distractions while I surf the internet. So let’s get to it.

First I gotta say I watch lots of youtube videos. I can even safely say that most of my learning is done through youtube. But the problem is I hate that I get distracted by some of the videos titles and thumbnails most of the time. Therefore the first 3 extensions I mention are dedicated to increasing the productivity of youtube. So, without wasting any more time, I’ll get to the list.

1. Unhook — Remove YouTube Recommended Videos

Have you ever visited youtube for one specific video, then get to youtube’s home page and see an interesting-looking thumbnail then click it, without you even knowing you are now in this rabbit hole of watching loads of videos until you waste around an hour of mindless videos. If this sounds familiar, then you must try this extension.

Unhook is a simple extension and does exactly what it says, and more. You can completely take control of what you see when you visit youtube. Everything from recommendations, youtube comments, to video suggestions while watching another video. This has it all. It’s a simple idea but it works so well. You can see how my youtube homepage looks like after this extension in the below image. Yeah you are right, there is nothing there 😆 and I love it.

2. Video speed controller

I hate to watch tutorials at the native speed. Most of the time they are too slow and the explanations take forever. I know this youtube player has an inbuilt feature to speed up videos but it has only 4 fast forward options, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, and 2 times. I like more flexibility in speeding up my videos.

“Video speed controller” provides just that. This extension has so many customizations, that you will be able to speed your videos the way you want. It also lets us change the fast forward duration and add your shortcuts as well.

3. TubersLab — Youtube Notepad

This is one of those extensions that are unknown but can be a game-changer for anyone who uses youtube tutorials to learn things. This has helped me a lot to take notes on the fly.

You need to create a free account for this extension. After creating the account it shows a side text editor besides the video on youtube. The best part of taking notes in tuberslab is, the video pauses the moment you started typing on the text area. And just like most inbuilt note-taking options websites like Coursera, your notes are saved with the timestamp of the note. So you can go back to the place without any hassle. There is also an option to create a summary of what you just watched. You can access all these notes in your account whenever you need them. So any self-learning programmers or college students, try this and let me know if you like it 😀.

4. Super simple highlighter

Have you ever wondered if you could highlight on any website or any resource you read? Well, with a super simple highlighter you can do that 😊. As the name suggests, this is a super simple extension. There is no signup process, after you install the extension you can just highlight a text from any website and right-click then highlight to create a highlight.

Though you should note one thing, the highlights taken on these extensions are not saved on any server, so I guess they are saved on your chrome storage. So, these highlights won’t be as solid as if you take them with the help of a server. However, if you are keener on taking solid notes and syncing them with several apps I would suggest you check the Command web browser. But this browser is only available for iOS. And can be installed on mac m1 laptops.

5. Grepper

If you are interested in development to any scale, then you must have heard of this extension. This is not a game-changer or anything, but it can be a big time-saver at times since you can get a similar answer in your google search. Therefore this extension saves time by removing the necessity to go through stack overflow answers to get a solution. Also, this extension allows you to add an answer right in google. And once added your answer will popup for any other grepper user who searches with the same keywords.

So that’s it, those are the 5 extensions that I regularly use to make my time on the internet productive. Thank you for checking out the article. And if you have any suggestions, please let me know. ciao ❤️.

Since you are here, I hope you enjoyed the article. By the way, if you want to hire a quality freelancer for any type of assistance with web development, just let me know.
